Holding on for a Hero
admiration and adoration. obsession and determination. curated by raf simons at the invitation of belgian project Z33, guided by heroes is a multimedia event/art exhibition that reprises the theme he explored when he guest edited the february 2001 issue of i-D. that issue was dedicated by raf to “creatives who stay true to their beliefs”, and here he identifies artists who paradoxically share a uniqueness of approach and a purity of vision. alongside music and film side-projects (the latter featuring screenings by larry clark and todd haynes), artists invited to contribute include vanessa beecroft, david claerbout, steven gontarski, don brown, simon periton, chris cunningham, santiago sierra, alex k, félix gonzález-torres, david sims, anton corbijn, and rineke dijkstra. as with all of raf’s work, guided by heroes provides a fascinating insight into his inner world, but also provies a platform from which these truly original protagonists are allowed to shine in their own right. you read it here first.
